Sometimes we have bad habits that trim years off of our lives. Today we’re going to discuss 9 ways to add years back to your life! Let’s go!

  1. Stop Smoking

Smoking is not just a habit. It’s a habit that kills. The U.S. Surgeon General warns that smoking is still the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. It’s not just first-hand smoke either. Second-hand smoke is just as dangerous and can lead to smoke triggered heart attacks and strokes in non-smokers. So, do yourself and your loved ones a favor – quit smoking!

2. Eat Green

Increasing your intake of green leafy vegetables provides the nutrients and fiber that’s missing from the average western diet. Surprisingly, vegetables like kale are great for plant-based protein. So stock up! Add a touch of lemon, olive oil and sea salt to taste.

3. Get Active

It’s time to stop talking about getting fit and actually doing it. Increasing activity is good for your bones, muscles and even your attitude. Commit to 2 hours and 30 minutes of exercise each week. That’s only 150 minutes per week and that’s all it takes to get on the road to being fit. Break your workout time down into 10, 15, 20 or 30-minute increments! You can do this!

4. Rest Up

Sleep is the nectar of life. It allows the body to rejuvenate, heal itself and refresh from the day’s activities. Lack of sleep causes increased hunger, weight gain, decreased motor skills, a weakened immune system, memory loss and more. Get 6 – 8 hours of rest per night.

5. Manage Stress

How you respond to stressful situations makes a difference in your health. Unmanaged stress at chronic levels can lead to a heart attack, obesity, depression and a weakened immune system. The American Psychological Association recommends the following tips to mange your stress.

  • Take a break from the stressor

  • Exercise

  • Smile and laugh

  • Get social support

  • Meditate

6. Take a Vacation

Do you ever wish you had a Calgon bath to take you away? Well, sometimes you have to do just that – get away! You have to break away from the things that stress you. Plan to have fun or simply relax. You can even do both! If finances are an issue, then take a staycation. Find somewhere close to home to visit. Whatever you do, make sure it involves fun and sun or snow and fireplaces!

7. Spend More Time With Family and Friends

If you find yourself bogged down in work, work, work or spending too much time alone, then make plans to hang out with family and friends. Have a girl’s night out. Catch a game with the guys. Surrounding yourself with good people will make you feel happy, loved and whole.

8. Serve Others

How can you make someone else’s day? How can you contribute to someone else’s life in a meaningful way? Look for opportunities to serve through volunteerism within your community.

9. Surround Yourself with Young People

This is the bell-ringer! If you really want to add years to your life, start hanging out with young folks. Their energy and vibrancy will rub off on you. You won’t have time to be old!

There are many ways to add years to your life. Please share what you do to have a longer, more fulfilling life in the comments below. Don’t just live long; live long, happy and healthy!
